Mount Agung

Mount Agung is the highest mountain on the island of Bali with an altitude of 3,031 m. This mountain is located in the district of Rendang, Karangasem Regency, Bali, Indonesia.

Most amazing view from Lempuyang Temple, there can also be found 'gate of heaven.

Besakih Temple, which is one of the most important temples in Bali, is located on the slopes of this mountain.

Gunung Agung is a stratovolcano type volcano, this mountain has a very large and very deep crater that sometimes emits smoke and water vapor.
  • From the Besakih Temple this mountain appears with a perfect pointed cone, but actually this mountain peak extends and ends at a circular and wide crater.
  • From the top of Mount Agung you can see the summit of Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok to the east, even though both mountains are covered in clouds because the two mountain peaks are above the clouds, the islands of Nusa Penida in the south along the beaches, including Sanur Beach, Mount Batur and Lake Batur in the northwest
Hiking trails

Climbing to the top of the mountain can be started from three climbing routes, namely:
  • From the south is from the sub-district of Karangasem Strait with basecamp in Pasar Agung Temple via the Strait market.
  • From the southeast is from Budakeling Village through Nangka steet.
  • From the southwest which is a climbing route commonly used by climbers, namely from Besakih Temple, Rendang sub-district, Karangasem regency.
Because of many accidents and the loss of several climbers, since May 2009 every climb of Mount Agung through Sebudi Village and Besakih, there must also be a guide to anticipate the possibility of an accident at a predetermined rate.
  • From Pasar Agung Temple, Strait: approximately 4 hours drive to get to the top. (2,850 m)
  • From Pura Besakih, Rendang: approximately 6 hours drive to get to the top. (max. height of 3,031 m)
  • For each climber, it is recommended to book a guide before climbing.
It is not recommended for climbers because this mountain area is very sanctified.
